Council Worker of the Year Awards 2010: Bravery

26/05/2010

Bravery is always an interesting award.  It certainly gets one of the biggest cheers on the night.  Many council jobs might not seem inherently risky or involve being ‘brave’ on a daily basis.  Yet by the very nature of being frontline services, they can throw up some extreme situations when least expected.

Take this year’s finalists -  Chris Carnell – a street cleaner from Rushcliffe.  Aside of keeping the borough clean, he’s chased and caught handbag thieves, rescued a shop owner from a blazing fire and most bizarrely stopped a bull rampaging through a local village!

Hampshire social worker Paul Child stopped a difficult case turning even more tragic when he was suddenly faced with talking a 13 year old boy down from a motorway bridge.

And Dave Weston, a night supervisor at a 24-hour monitoring service in Blackpool.  No ordinary shift when he found himself out on location making a life or death decision to run into a burning house and save an elderly lady.

We added this category to the awards 2 years ago as we felt there were some extraordinary acts of selflessness and bravery happening in councils, and always look forward to reading the entries that come in.  This year is no different.  Watch the films and have a look for yourself – they are certainly some of the most emotional tales from among our finalists. And these 3 are probably the last people to shout about what they’ve done.
